On October 16-17, ALFA hosted 150 executives who work to advance excellence in senior living at the ALFA 2013 Senior Living Executive Forum. The two-day event in Las Vegas, NV offered attendees deep insight into factors shaping senior living.
“The ALFA Forum is an intensive learning and collaborative environment focused on relevant topics related to the senior living business today and in the future,” said Richard P. Grimes, ALFA president and CEO. “The ALFA Forum encourages each of us to exercise our strategic skill sets to raise the bar for excellence in senior living.”
Day One Experience
Attendees had the option of three different pre-forum educational sessions to experience on Wednesday morning.
Health policy expert David Merritt of Leavitt Partners headlined Wednesday’s general session by exploring Medicaid, Accountable Care Organizations, the Affordable Care Act and highlighting their impact on the senior living landscape. Merritt also discussed the current Congressional situation and offered his opinions on future policy decisions.
Afternoon discussions between ALFA’s Executive Roundtable Members and ALFA’s President’s Council Members centered on pressing industry topics. Roundtable chairs facilitated discussions such as federal issues affecting senior living providers, occupancy trends taking place in the industry, adapting to rising acuity levels, current and future financial market conditions, and securing data and unique security requirements for providers.
Following a productive day of professional growth and development, attendees enjoyed a spectacular view of the world-famous Bellagio fountains while networking at the Hyde Bellagio.
Day Two Experience
MIT blackjack legend Jeffrey Ma, who is also the founder and CEO of productivity start-up TenXer, Thursday morning highlighted business lessons learned from blackjack, including confidence, conviction and the ability to manage risk. He stressed the importance of using data to improve effectiveness and dictate decisions. Ma also entertained the audience with personal anecdotes about the notoriety he gained during his Las Vegas exploits.
Following Ma’s presentation, President’s Council member attended their annual meeting, which featured an interactive panel discussion moderated by Tim Fox, CEO & Founder of FOX Rehabilitation. Brad Klitsch, Vice President of Market Development for Direct Supply and ALFA President’s Council Chairman, facilitated a conversation about future membership and programmatic opportunities. The annual meeting was also used as an opportunity for President’s Council companies to learn about how ALFA and its initiatives are advancing the collective interests of the senior living business.
Concurrently, Executive Roundtable members met with their peer groups to solve real-world business challenges facing their discipline within the senior living realm. In addition to peer interaction, roundtable members explored best practices from outside the senior living industry. The Dining Services Roundtable, for example, was guided on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bellagio restaurants, while the Sales and Marketing Roundtable took in an interactive presentation about how social media is used to market apartment rentals.
A summary report of the ALFA Senior Living Executive Forum is being produced and will become available in November.
