Omega 3 Oils May Protect Senior’s Eye Health

[current_event_date]

Seniors who consume omega-3 fatty acids, as well as shellfish, regularly may stave off age-related macular degeneration (AMD), says a study published in the December issue of the journal Ophthalmology.

The participants studied who had AMD were significantly less likely to consume Omega-3 or shellfish. Researchers examined data compiled from a year-long dietary survey conducted in the 1990s studied nearly 2,400 seniors between the ages of 65 and 84 living in Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where fish and shellfish are typically eaten regularly.

After respondents’ food intake was assessed, participants underwent eye exams. About 450 had AMD, including 68 who had an advanced stage of the disease, which can lead to vision impairment or blindness.
