Advisory Council Updates National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s

The Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services has released an updated version of its National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease. The revision outlines progress made towards accomplishing the goals set last year, and includes new and updated action steps.

The revised plan includes many additional action steps to achieve the goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease by 2025, with a strong emphasis on investment in research and international collaboration. The four other goals of the National Plan focus on improving quality of care and efficiency for those with from Alzheimer’s disease, expanding support for individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, engaging with the public and enhancing public awareness of the disease, and improving data to track  the progress of the plan.

The area of focus that includes the most additions is elder abuse. The updated plan contains several new action steps to protect and prevent elder abuse, especially for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Additions related to elder abuse include:

  • Enhance training to address the needs of individuals living in long-term care settings
  • Incorporate elder abuse awareness into aging network activities
  • Translate and disseminate information on abuse of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia
  • Improve the ability of legal services to address the needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease
  • Improve the ability of Alzheimer’s disease information and referral systems to identify abuse or neglect
  • Educate fiduciaries about managing the finances of people with Alzheimer’s disease
