[current_event_date]

Culinary experts and enthusiasts from across California gathered at the SoCalGas Energy Resource Center in Downey, CA, on Nov. 29 for a Culinary Knockout Competition. Hosted by the California Assisted Living Association (CALA) and SoCalGas, this event showcased the remarkable talents of senior living chefs and culinary students in an elimination-style competition.

Congratulations to Chef Bernardo Boyboy, executive chef at Oakmont Management Group’s Ivy Park at Mission Viejo for his outstanding victory at this year’s Culinary Knockout Competition. His triumph came after facing stiff competition from chefs from CALA member communities throughout the state. Congratulations also go to Chef Boyboy’s student assistants, Cagla Bazley from Cypress College and Robert Hecht from Chaffey College.

CALA President and CEO Sally Michael expressed her enthusiasm about the event, saying, “The Culinary Knockout Competition is a testament to the incredible talent and passion that exists within the senior living culinary community. It’s heartwarming to witness the collaboration between seasoned chefs and budding culinary stars, and we congratulate Chef Boyboy and his team on their well-deserved win.”

The competition began with 10 teams, each comprising randomly paired senior living chefs with culinary students. As the rounds progressed, the field narrowed down, with only one team emerging as the ultimate Culinary Knockout Champion. The competition captivated the audience with three thrilling rounds of culinary challenges, each more intense than the last.

Spectators had the opportunity to watch the competitors in action on-screen as they whipped up tantalizing dishes, and there was great suspense as the results of each round were revealed. Throughout the event, attendees also had the chance to engage with sponsors, explore potential career opportunities in the culinary field, and participate in a drawing to win cash prizes.

The Culinary Knockout Competition not only celebrated the culinary talent in senior living communities but also provided an excellent platform for students to learn from experienced chefs, fostering a spirit of mentorship and camaraderie within the field of senior living.
