In the world of aviation, there are many programs that aim to inspire, educate, and entertain. However, few can compare to the profound impact that Dream Flights has on its participants. This exceptional organization provides free flights to senior veterans in restored Boeing Stearman biplanes, the same aircraft used to train many military aviators during World War II. Founded by Darryl Fisher, Dream Flights honors the sacrifices of these brave men and women by offering them an experience that rekindles the joy of flight and the pride of service.
Tales from the Sky: Veterans Reliving Their Glory Days
One of the many memorable stories from Dream Flights involves Hank Snow, a veteran who served in the Army, Air Force, and Navy. Hank’s Dream Flight was piloted by Merilyn Chaffee, a dedicated volunteer who treasures every moment she spends in the sky with these heroes.
Before each flight, pilots brief their passengers on safety and encourage them to use a small circular mirror in the front cockpit to communicate during the flight. A thumbs up means they are having fun, and a thumbs down means they need to return early. Hank, however, took this communication to another level. As the plane ascended into the sky, Merilyn noticed Hank giving not just one, but two enthusiastic thumbs up. His broad grin and twinkling eyes reflected the pure joy he was experiencing.
“As we were taking off, I glanced up, and Hank was staring at me in the mirror with a twinkle in his eye and a grin on his face and not one, but two thumbs up!” Merilyn recalls. “Every time our eyes connected in the mirror during the flight, he would flash me a cheeky grin and two thumbs up. When we landed, and I met him at the front cockpit, he told me, ‘I didn’t want there to be any confusion about whether I wanted to come back early or not, so I gave you two thumbs up! That was damn fine!'”
Hank’s double thumbs up wasn’t just a sign of his enjoyment; it was a testament to the success of Dream Flights in delivering a genuinely unforgettable experience.
Honoring Veterans Beyond the Sky: Bob Fisher’s Story
Dream Flights isn’t just about the flights; it’s about the community and the shared moments of appreciation and respect. Robert “Bob” Fisher, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Korea, had a unique experience with Dream Flights. On the day of his scheduled flight, Bob didn’t have the strength to get into the plane. However, his spirit was undeniably strong.
Pilot Molly Littlefield, along with Bob’s family, made sure that the day was still special. Molly signed Bob’s Dream Flights hat, and together with his family, they celebrated Bob’s service. The green cap Bob wore that day held significant sentimental value—it was the same cap he wore as a radio operator whenever duty required him to be on the deck of the USS Antietam.
Bob’s two daughters, a son-in-law, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter joined the celebration, creating a moment that will be cherished forever. This story highlights that the magic of Dream Flights extends beyond the sky. It lies in the connections made, the stories shared, and the honor bestowed upon these veterans for their invaluable service.
Milestones and Celebrations: The 7,000th Dream Flight
As Dream Flights continues to soar, the organization is approaching an exciting milestone. On September 18, in Texas, the Spirit of Wisconsin biplane will land to present the 7,000th Dream Flight to a deserving senior veteran. This event is not just a celebration of one veteran’s experience but a testament to the thousands of lives touched by Dream Flights since its inception.
