Emeritus Community Hosts Senior Showcase To Combat Ageism

[current_event_date]

In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Emeritus at Lake Ridge fought ageism by showcasing examples of the variety of skills and talents that make seniors an asset to society. The community’s celebration of resident engagement and talent was a part of larger initiative championed by ALFA that aims to redefine the way society views aging and older adults.

Because ageism marginalizes and devalues older adults in society, it is widely regarded as an important contributor to elder abuse. To help highlight the immense value and vast talents that older adults possess, Emeritus Senior Living’s Emeritus at Lake Ridge hosted an cultural event, which included performances by several seniors including a pianist, a singer, a poet, as well as a display of resident artwork.

Family members and staff joined the residents from the assisted living and memory care community in the celebration. Audience members danced and sang along with the musical performances and paid tribute to everyone’s various talents at a communitywide social.

The event is part of ALFA’s Older is Wiser campaign, which seeks to change the way society views aging. Senior living communities across the country can participate by hosting a special event honoring their residents’ skills, talents, and/or accomplishments. Share information about your event with ALFA by contacting Jackie Kerin at [email protected], and visit alfa.org/defineolder for more ways to help.
