Foulk Living and Dawn Career Institute: A Winning Partnership for Future Nurses
It’s a win-win situation in which two local highly esteemed organizations have joined forces. 
Foulk Living senior living community in Wilmington, Delaware, is a full-service, rental continuing care retirement community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and comprehensive skilled nursing.
U.S. News and World Report has just recognized Foulk Living as a 2025 Best Nursing Home in the category of long-term care. Earlier this year, Foulk Living was designated a 2024 Best Independent Living Community and a 2024 Best Memory Care Community.
Dawn Career Institute is known for providing excellent education with hands-on training for careers in areas including healthcare.
Since 2023, Foulk Living has served as a clinical training site for students in Dawn Career Institute’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. “The campus president, Shawn Carney, reached out to me and told me that the students had loved their experience,” said Leslie Johnson, executive director of Foulk Living. “He told me that leadership was trying to get the board to allow them to run a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program. I wrote a letter to the board agreeing to be a training location for that initiative as well. The program was approved, and we recently completed a rotation of the first group of students doing their clinical training with us.”
Leslie explained that the inaugural group of students were placed with the most seasoned LPNs who have worked in the community for years. “We knew our nurses would be excellent instructors and role models for the students,” she said. “They gain valuable hands-on experience by shadowing these professionals in their role, with their RN instructor helping to guide them as well.”
A Dawn Career Institute team member thanked Foulk Living for the recently completed rotation, through a Google review. “…the whole Foulk Living team were exceptional and excellent…The students learned a lot this term, and the Dawn Career Institute family is grateful to Foulk Living for your continuous support in paving the way for these upcoming nurses.”
The next group of LPN students began their clinical training with Foulk Living in mid-January.
“This is definitely a win-win situation,” said Leslie, explaining that Foulk Living is able to share a positive and professional experience for the students. Furthermore, she is hoping that some of the students will be so inspired they will perhaps decide to work in senior living.
