The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is now asking both government agencies and private sector forces to help track multiple chronic conditions.
HHS’s Strategic Framework on Multiple Chronic Conditions is aimed at helping HHS deal with the growing number of individuals, including the rapidly increasing senior population, with multiple chronic conditions. According to HHS, more than a quarter of Americans suffer from multiple chronic conditions including arthritis, diabetes, and asthma, for example.
HHS estimates that treating those cases accounts for 66 percent of the nation’s health-care budget. Our health-care system is not designed to treat more than one disease at a time, which increases the risk of drug reactions, unnecessary hospitalizations, and conflicting medical advice.
The new effort is designed to help change the system and provide more information to doctors and patients alike about treating several chronic conditions simultaneously.
