Independent Research Demonstrates the Value of Assisted Living in Helping Seniors Live Longer and Access More Care

[current_event_date]

(Washington, DC) – Today, the nonpartisan and objective research organization (NORC) at the University of Chicago released a new report that found that senior housing residents live longer and have more access to care than those who do not. Maggie Elehwany, Argentum Senior Vice President, Public Affairs issued the following statement:

“This important research provides compelling evidence of the numerous benefits assisted living offers older adults. The findings demonstrate that assisted living not only improves quality of life for residents, but that it also extends peoples’ lives, reduces reliance on potentially harmful medications, and promotes greater access to vital health services.”

The report can be accessed at https://content.nic.org/NIC_Analysis-of-Longevity-Among-Senior-Housing_Summary_Report

Among the key findings of the report:

  • Older adults who moved into senior housing live longer than those who do not;
  • Senior housing communities outperform other settings in managing residents’ anti-psychotic medications;
  • Older adults who live in senior housing are more likely to receive care and preventative services at home than those who do not;
  • Older adults’ longevity is better in top-performing, professionally managed, senior housing facilities.

This report confirms that assisted living improves the care and quality of life for America’s seniors, any why it enjoys some of the highest customer satisfaction rates of any industry. According to the 2023 J.D. Power Senior Living Satisfaction Survey, assisted living communities received a satisfaction score of 837 (on a 1,000-point scale) — higher than industries like travel and hospitality. Additional surveys have found that 96% of residents report that their assisted living communities provide sufficient health care and access to care. Nearly 75% say assisted living has improved their quality of life, and 70% indicate their health outlook improved.

Today’s report is the third in a series assessing the health and well-being of senior housing and care residents. A previous report found that residents experienced a 10% decline in frailty levels one year after moving into their community. These reports affirm the findings in Argentum white papers demonstrating the value of assisted living. By focusing on social determinants of health—social engagement, community involvement, balanced nutrition, transportation and access to exercise—assisted living communities play an important role in improving residents’ overall health, well-being and safety.
