Multifaceted Green Strategy Brings Savings to New and Existing Communities

[current_event_date]

While many new projects aim for LEED certification, Brightview Senior Living’s holistic approach to going green includes retrofitting existing buildings to reap savings companywide while reducing their environmental impact.

“Going green” applies not only to new construction, but also to operating existing communities in a more eco-friendly way. Brightview Senior Living is investing in both. “Primarily what we do is provide services and a lifestyle for people, so we’re in it for the long-term,” explains Dan Rexford, vice president of sales. “We want to build and manage and continue to refurbish our structures in a way that they can be operated most efficiently.”

Brightview of South River, Maryland, is a LEED Gold certified example of “new” green, where site planning, water conservation, energy efficiency, building materials, and ongoing education of residents about the many LEED features is good for the environment and good for business.

Meanwhile, Brightview has appointed a director of capital projects and engaged third-party energy consultants to help its existing communities adopt green products and practices in energy consumption, housekeeping, interior features, and so on. “It’s just the right thing to do,” says Rexford.
