Pilot Program Decreases CNA Turnover

ALFA 2012 Best of the Best Program to Spotlight

Senior Living Communities’ Track 2 Success program, an ALFA 2012 Best of
the Best
Program to Spotlight, helps engage, educate, and retain
talented certified nursing assistants.

Senior Living Communities has found a way for a small company that can’t offer much upward mobility to still capture and engage talent at both ends of the CNA pipeline.

Through Track 2 Success, recent CNA graduates who have completed their clinical rotations in skilled nursing are trained in person-centered care while they wait to take their certification exam. By the end, participants must come up with a new resident-centered activity. “Essentially, that immersion is a stepping stone to being a really good caregiver,” says Katherine Crockett, VP of talent management.

A second component of the program, a Career Ladder for CNAs, provides growth and leadership opportunities for existing employees. The company’s experienced CNAs spend time with mentors in all other departments. “They actually learn about the entire business,” says Crockett.

In the four communities where the program was piloted, overall CNA turnover decreased by more than 20 percent.

The above best practice was recognized as an ALFA 2012 Best of the Best Program to Spotlight.
