She’s a pioneer, an early ‘settler.’.
Helen Meints and her late husband Don were among the very first residents of GreenFields of Geneva. Now, celebrating the luxury senior living community’s 13th anniversary, Helen considers the corresponding number lucky. “Living here has been such a blessing,” she said. 
The Meintses, formerly of Lockport, decided to move to GreenFields well before the building even existed. They’d realized as they got older and faced health challenges, that it was important to be closer to family in Geneva and Batavia. “We’d heard about the plans for the community and went to some introductory events before construction had even started. We were able to see drawings and plans in the marketing and design office in downtown Geneva. It looked beautiful and we loved the location. We were able to pick out colors, carpeting, flooring, and appliances. It was like building our own new home. It was exciting,” said Helen.
Helen and Don proudly attended the groundbreaking on the 26-acre campus for GreenFields in 2010, and the first residents moved in February 2012. “We were the 19th residents to move in, way in the beginning,” Helen said, adding that the move to GreenFields was perfect for the couple.
As a Life Plan Community, also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), GreenFields of Geneva includes independent living, with access to memory care, assisted living, rehabilitation, and long-term skilled care. Helen said that the continuum of care was ‘very significant’ to the couple’s decision to move there. Don had health issues, and as they worsened, Helen was grateful for the close proximity of skilled care. “When he was in skilled nursing, it was only 200 steps for me to visit him from my independent living apartment,” she said.
Helen, who just turned 90, is very active at GreenFields, leading the Lifelong Learning program. “”I feel very proud and privileged to play a significant role in this life enrichment endeavor,” she said. She also participates in fitness and spiritual life, visits residents in healthcare, spends time with friends, attends the senior living community’s programs, volunteers for resident outreach, and more.
“There are just wonderful people here at GreenFields. The residents move here from various places, and we all just welcome each other. They’ve had so many different occupations and experiences; we’re all interested in each other and really care,” she said.
