Hoffman SummerWood Community’s Senior Voices: Self Expression Through Poetry program was honored as a 2012 Best of the Best Program to Spotlight. The innovative poetry program not only provides a creative outlet, but many participants also report a renewed sense of purpose.

Like a poem that yields surprising depths, the significance of Hoffman SummerWood’s poetry writing workshop in the lives of the residents who participate has grown over time. Self Expression Through Poetry started in 2010 after a local poet volunteered to do a reading at the community. The poet came back to facilitate the weekly workshop, in which a dozen participants write poems and critique each other’s work. For many participants, the program has provided a renewed sense of purpose.

The program “allows our residents to share their innermost feelings through writing engaging poetry in which they utilize their unique visions of life, a perspective only they can draw upon,” says Executive Director Joan Carney. The poets have even conducted readings at the senior living community and public places, and the program was featured on public access television.
